How do you unlock more on mario kart wii?

whenever i play mario kart wii and do good i never unlock any new cups or rounds. even when i play alone and do good nothing happens what do i have to do to unlock new courses?
Do you have to progress through wii rock band to unlock more songs?

I only have about 10 songs available on wii rock band. How do you unlock more songs? It says there are dozens on the box.
