why in mario kart wii am i unlocking characters for certain amounts of races races.. can i unlock all this way?

i have seen the list many times of how to unlock characters is mario kart wii.. for some reason though i am now getting characters for races played.. example: yesterday i unlocked baby daisy for racing 1950 races and not getting a star rank on all 50cc cups.. can i unlock all the rest of the characters i dont have this way?
